Bicentenary of Alfred Tennyson's BirthAn Overview of the Celebrations of His 200th Birthday
2009 is the 200th anniversary of Alfred Lord Tennyson's birth. There are many upcoming events this year celebrating his life. They are listed and described briefly below.
The British Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson was born on August 6, 1809. He has been a well-loved and venerated poet since his life timeand beyond. There have been many events celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth throughout the year and there will be many more until the end of this year. The primary ones will be outlined below from July through the end of the year. See the links below for more information. Continuation From Events Started Earlier This YearTennyson in Lincoln: Display at Lincoln Central Library, Free School Lane. Display of Tennyson’s hat, cloak, pipes and myriad other items belonging to the poet. Ongoing indefinitely. Lady of Shalott Short Film and Tennyson Transformed at The Collection, Danes Terrace, Lincolnshire: Paintings and sketches of Tennyson and scenes inspired by his poetry, plus a short video inspired by The Lady of Shalott. Ongoing until August 31st. Tennyson Today: An audiovisual exhibition on the Life of Tennyson. At the Alford House and Museum until October 30th, 2009. Includes filmed readings of Tennyson’s works. July Events16th through the 20th: The Young Tennyson International Conference, at the University of Lincoln in Lincoln, United Kingdom. This conference will have well-known speakers and professors such as Gabriel Woolf, Seamus Perry and Christopher Ricks, who is considered the foremost Tennyson scholar. 26th: A Tennyson Tea Party, Louth Westgate House: Have tea and cakes in Louth, 3:00-5:30 p.m. August Events
September Events22nd and 29th: Tennyson-Themed Talks at Louth Library, 7:30 p.m. October Events6th and 20th: Tennyson-Themed Talks at Louth Library, 7:30 p.m. November Events17th: Tennyson-Themed Talks at Louth Library, 7:30 p.m. Normal 0 These events of poetry reading, artwork and discussions are appropriate for celebrating the life of a man who devoted himself to poetry and all things beautiful in nature. Most of these events focus on Tennyson’s contributions to British literature and how he has affected its readers as well as other poets. A celebration such as this comes once every century, making it a significant and rare experience.
